In an atmosphere of empathy, support and safety, the family members share with me their different perspectives of what brought them to my office. I encourage them to courageously voice their fears, anxieties and conflicts. We begin to examine the relationships in the family and identify and address the unhealthy patterns of relating. I begin to teach the family about the importance, nature and mechanics of healthy boundaries and the critical role they play in the harmony and cooperation in the family. In working with families, my emphasis remains on the patterns of relating and how it feels for each family member; and I teach specific ways to improve and correct disruptive, unsatisfactory patterns.
This work begins in the first session as I observe the family interact with each other and immediately address what’s happening. Ensuing sessions involve more of the same with assignments to practice the newly learned and acquired techniques.
